Is deferred action a boon or bane?

Deferred Action – The latest immigration reform brought out by the US President, has been the talk of the town. Undocumented youth have begun to file in their applications with the USCIS, with the hope of a life in America. Although they had been living in the US since they entered illegally as a child, they were deprived of many privileges purely because of their undocumented status. That too for no fault of their own!  So how is this deferred action policy going to help these undocumented immigrants and the country?

Deferred Action

How is Deferred Action for childhood arrivals (DACA )a boon?

When a person is placed under deferred action, it means that that person can look for an employment in the US without having to worry about getting deported. This is because they will be placed at the bottom of the list of those who are to be deported. With the facility of renewing the deferred action status after the inital 2 yrs, these immigrants can safely establish a life for themselves in the United States. They can earn their living and not be in poverty. They can also apply to get a Driver’s license. But that is all the privilege that seems to come with this policy, for one cannot become a permanent resident nor a US citizen through this.

Employment eligibility assurance and No fear of deportationObvious boons.

How is DACA bane for the country?

The only disadvantage of this policy is that citizenship status or green card is totally impossible. But this may be seen as a small issue when the basic need of a job is being taken care of. This policy will definitely benefit the large crowd of the undocumented youth, no doubt about that. But what about the sincere, followers-of-the rules-immigrants category that are still waiting to get a visa to enter the USA? Is giving preference to DACA over the legal immigrants right? A reasonable demand from the legal category would be – Spend the time that is being directed to DACA to clear the backlog of the immigrant visa applications. Fair enough! Directing all man power and resources to cater to those who are undocumented when there are so many waiting to get cleared on the legal route, will definitely affect the US immigration system.
